Update from chapter president Frank Barrows:

Next Wednesday (June 25) at 6:30 p.m., your Greater Charlotte Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists will present a screening of “Absence of Malice,” one of the best movies I’ve ever seen about our business. The screening will take place at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, 911 E. Morehead Street in Charlotte.

Starring Paul Newman and Sally Field, with a screenplay by former Detroit Free Press editor Kurt Luedtke and direction by Sydney Pollack, the film delves into such journalistic issues as accuracy, sourcing and impact. I first watched “Absence of Malice” in 1981 when it was released, and ever since I’ve been much more healthily skeptical about information and where I got it.

You won’t catch “Absence of Malice” on AMC or HBO. You can’t stream it on Netflix or find it at Redbox. So this a rare opportunity to see an important film. For free.

Keith Cannon, Wingate University journalism professor, has used “Absence of Malice” in his journalism classes, and he’ll lead a short discussion about it afterwards.

That’s Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Dilworth Grille.

Food, drink, fellowship, and an excellent movie.
I hope you’ll join us.
— Frank Barrows
