Coming Jan. 8: A conversation with Ken Garfield, and more for 2015

Happy Holidays to all! As we finish 2014 and head for the New Year, here’s an update on some programs coming up in 2015.

Ken Garfield

Ken Garfield

Our next meeting is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 8 and we’re back at Leroy Fox Restaurant on Sharon Amity Road. We will have a “Conversation with Ken Garfield.” For those of you who don’t know him, Ken is a 30-year veteran of the news business. The former religion editor of The Charlotte Observer is currently communication director for Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Ken will talk with us about a variety of things, including media coverage of religion and his transition from news into public relations in today’s age of social media. You might even get a refresher on how to write an obituary, as Ken has also recently started his own business helping people write the life stories of their loved ones,

We have a couple of other programs already lined up for the coming year:

On Thursday, Feb. 12, we’ll have a radio-themed program with a “Conversation with Arroe Collins.” Arroe, a 30+ year veteran of radio and “voiceover” work, hosts several shows on I Heart Radio. He’ll talk about his career and the changes in the radio landscape caused by new “platforms” made possible by Internet broadcast. Our March program is TBA, but we’ll spend the April 9 meeting taking a tour of the Ballantyne studios of ESPNU, the college sports-focused channel of the ESPN network. Mark your calendar for all of these!

Keith Cannon,

Greater Charlotte SPJ President
