April 6 update: Unfortunately, we learned this afternoon that our planned tour for this week has been canceled. The station is changing its policy for tours. We’re hopingto be able to offer a tour this summer and when send you the new date when it is confirmed.

We’re at the height of March Madness and I’m sure many of you have been watching your share of sports programming on TV this month.

But whether you’re a sports junkie or not, you won’t want to miss our next meeting of the Charlotte Pro chapter of SPJ. We’re taking a tour of the ESPNU studios in Ballantyne!

Join us at 7 p.m. (note departure from usual meeting time), Thursday, April 9 for an insider’s look at ESPN’s channel devoted exclusively to college sports. ESPNU’s headquarters are also now the home of the SEC Network.

I’ve done this tour for some of my classes at Wingate and it’s a great opportunity to look at how television programming is produced — and occasionally to see a recognizable figure from the sports world. ESPN producer James Reed will be our tour guide.

Mark your calendar for this event. The address is 11001 Rushmore Drive in Charlotte, off the Ballantyne Commons Parkway. If you need directions, let me know. And please send an email to if you intend to attend, as I’d like to be able to give the ESPNU folks as specific a number as I can.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you there.

Keith Cannon,

President, Greater Charlotte SPJ
